Anzac Day preparations and a Fremont Park upgrade head up the latest news in the City of Playford’s Next Great City developments.
Fremont Park upgrade endorsed
Plans to further upgrade Fremont Park at Elizabeth were given the green light at the City of Playford’s April meeting. The upgrade will increase the size and quality of the central play space and picnic area, increase the size and visibility of the lake, and provide kiosk and function spaces to assist in making Playford’s iconic park a regional attraction. The project will now progress to detailed design and commencement of construction in late 2018.
Just the way we roll
Works at the Playford Bowling Club are nearly complete, with the synthetic greens now being tested. Quality specifications for the greens at the soon to be opened facility, at Goodman Road, Elizabeth, require a maximum 10mm tolerance to ensure smooth rolling for competition bowls. Early tests on the base layer of the greens have returned tolerances of 1mm or less – an outstanding result. Interest is building in the new centre, part of the City of Playford’s Sports Precinct, as completion approaches. A fly-through video posted on the Facebook page of principal contractor Romaldi Constructions has received 18,000 views.
Fountain clean-up
After many years in storage, the iconic Windsor Green water feature was returned to public display last year as part of the new Prince George Plaza at Elizabeth. The stonework and sculptures were given a light restoration to ensure they retained their character and age. However, some staining of the stonework was still present. Council recently secured the services of a stonework restorer – Best Marble & Tile Care – who cleaned up the stonework and restored it to its best condition.
Architects tour Grenville Hub
Key staff from Playford Council and City Collective architects met recently to undertake a detailed tour of the Grenville Hub to see the facility in action and discuss requirements with users. Following a consultation session in March, the new Grenville Consultation Group has been formed to prepare for the development of the new Grenville Hub in Prince George Plaza, Elizabeth. This group features a broad range of patrons, volunteers and staff tasked with gathering input and feedback about the project.

Sporting club benefits
City of Playford sporting clubs that meet best-practice criteria have been offered new licence agreements featuring up to 95 per cent community rate discounts. Twelve clubs for the first time now also have provisional Office for Recreation and Sport STARCLUB status – improving opportunities to attract future Government grants and ensuring that thousands of Playford residents continue to benefit from participation in sport.
Playford ready for Anzac Day
Each year, the City of Playford holds two significant Anzac Day events, starting with an Overnight Vigil on Tuesday, 24 April at 7.30pm. On Anzac Day a Dawn Service will be held from 6am. Both events will be held at the Cross of Remembrance, Smithfield Memorial Gardens, Anderson Walk, Smithfield.
Meanwhile, there has also been an upgrade to the surrounds of the memorial stone at the Virginia Institute (left), with plantings of a lone pine and Gallipoli rosemary plants.For information about the City of Playford's services, click HERE.
